Lately, when I haven't been dreaming about all the things I'll get to experience on my gap year in Britain, I've been thinking about a few things that I'll miss about home. Not to say that I'm not excited- on the contrary! But I know when I'm abroad, there will be a few things to get used to, including not having the usual comforts around me. Here's a selection of things that I'm certainly going to miss when I move.
- The Arts Lounge. I'm going to miss lazy afternoons in the Arts Lounge at the university, cuddling up on the couches and watching bad 80's movies. I'm going to miss mediocre sushi from Greenhouse, and skipping class to sleep or snag the good couch. I'm going to miss having a monopoly on that place, or so we'd like to think. (I'm not going to miss 'Cave Troll' or her friends, or 'Gross Couple Who Wrestle' however.) I am going to miss George's Biceps and Beefy McBuffcake/ The Hulk. And Maddie and Kelsey's loud giggles and funny stalker pictures- I'm going to miss seeing them around! Practicing Russian with Fiona in front of Bryan and Kai while they get frustrated not being able to understand us. I'm going to miss the leather couches that suck your energy, the red pillars and black walls... and of course, screenings of, "The Best Of Hockey '94".
-I'm also going to miss the Russian Studies professors and students. I'm going to miss going to classes with them and I'm especially going to miss the International students. I'm going to miss Russian study/wine nights with Fiona.
-Degrees' Falafel fries and tzatziki sauce.
- I'm going to miss evenings strolling around the Forks.
- Nights in Osbourne village. Whether it's going to the Toad, Billabong or Carlos and Murphy's. I'm going to miss epic hangover breakfasts at Stella's. Chats in Starbucks.
-Gelati on Corydon at G.G.'s. Specifically their lemon and their coconut gelati!
-Nights at Johnny G's, The King's Head, and Fort Garry.
-Liberal Party parties, networking and doing political things. Hanging out with Andrew, Dane, Janelle. I'm a little sad that I won't be there to help rebuild the party.
-Weekends in Rob's basement. Watching South Park, How I Met Your Mother and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Pickling ourselves with martinis and the like. But I AM NOT going to miss that couch, or the faint pizza smell on it or the knife slashes in it. Okay, I might miss the couch a little. But I hope Rob someday re-upholsters it...
-The bar in my sister's basement.
- YPM Winter Session and Speaker's Night. I'm going to miss seeing the excitement of the new backbenchers, the regality of the House chambres and rotundra. The excitement of debate, goofy page notes, catching quick naps in the member's lounge. I'm going to miss staying up all night with some of my best friends joking about Fringe Festivals and making Bojan speak Serbian to me. I'm going to miss the familiar, homey smell and feeling of Kelvin High School. I'm going to miss bedtime chats with Janelle. Bonnie's exuberance, Danielle's clever jokes, Jonathan's antics. Everyone that I've spent Winter Break with for the past four years. And getting a 'Stalker's Handbook' at the end of it. Though I still haven't gotten mine back from '09 (cough, Bojan) and an entry for '10's...(cough, Bojan). I'm going to miss getting tipsy on Speaker's Night... before the first course is even served. Good times.
-Summers at the cabin with family and friends. My mother and Miguel giggling over mojitos and beer. Fishing, bonfires, board games and eating great food with the people I love. I'm not going to miss the tequila hangovers.
-Walks to the Rockwood Cemetery to visit my grandpa's grave.
-The Legion regulars. Ron's hilarious questions about world affairs and Walter's warm smile.
-Breakfast, talks and tea with Tabitha.

-Breakfast and Christmas drinks with Sanche.
-The places that remind me of Richard.
-My family. I know I'm going to miss Mom, Dad, Grandma, Tyyne and Wes and everyone else. I'm going to miss Sunday dinners and barbeques. Going to the lake. I love them and I know that they'll keep in touch... I know Mom will email me at least three times a week.
-And I'm especially going to miss my friends. Jess, Fiona, Janelle, Mikol, Bryan, Kerry, Kayla, Rob... everyone else. Too many friends that I'll miss to even count. Too many things that I'm going to miss to even count. Not having my closest friends with me I think is going to be the hardest part. I feel like there's not enough time in the remaining months of summer to spend the time I want with them. There's a giant list of things that I want to do with each of my friends, but I'll be leaving before half of that stuff will happen. I think I love them all a bit too much. I sure hope that's enough when I'm an ocean away.
Okay, okay, now I'm getting all emotional and sad about leaving. This isn't supposed to happen until the airport! (It also might have to do with the fact that I'm listening to Dashboard Confessional while making this list...)
As sad as I am to be leaving all these wonderful things and people behind, I'm excited to be starting a new chapter in my life. Three months is creeping up way too fast.
