Art and Flights.

Last day in Toronto. We were a little slow getting ready Wednesday morning, but eventually we headed through Chinatown to the Ontario Art Gallery. Now, I must say I was a little disappointed. The exhibits were not as well organized as I had hoped, in the sense that to my personal preference I like my art compartmentalized in a way that doesn't mix eras or comparisons. Some exhibits staged style comparisons which really was not my thing. The European Collection, although housing three or four Pissarro, a Monet, Van Dyck, a Rembrant and a single Van Gogh, did not reach my expectations for one of Canada's most extensive art galleries. The European Collection was confined to a small couple of rooms. Unfairly, the last art gallery I was in was The Hermitage, so yeah; I'm being a pretentious ass. The Canadian art collection was impressive, but my favourite exhibit was the contemporary General Idea exhibit. A group of three artists founded in the 1960's, the three Canadian men explored different taboo themes of the times such as gender, homosexuality, sexual mores, AIDS, and societal/sexual bondage. General Idea was a group that were part of the forefront in AIDS awareness, devoting much of their art to the cause. In 1994, two members of the group passed away from AIDS. I thought the exhibit was probably the best contemporary exhibit I have seen. Great work, look them up.
Okay, enough about my art obsessions . We went for lunch to a little French cafe across the road. It was a bit overpriced for the tiny portion sizes, as Jess and I were starved from walking around the city and gallery all morning, but the Moroccan tea I had was probably worth it. Afterwards, we took the subway to the harbour and relaxed in the shade for a few hours. We grabbed a tasty hot dog from a street vendor and went back to the hostel to get our bags.
We zoomed to the airport, jaunted through security and were on our way back to Winnipeg. Toronto was fun; I can't say it was my favourite city I've been in but I wouldn't mind going back for a longer period to see more, do more and party a little more.
